SHORT HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTICS

The University of Drama was founded in Cluj-Napoca in 1948 and functioned there until its moving to the town of Târgu Mures in 1954.
Having two departments (the Romanian and the Hungarian one), the University is training its students in acting, stage direction and theatrology.
Its practical activity is predominant and it is taking place on the stage of the "Studio" (the theatre hall of the University) in form of performances (6 first-night performances annualy; plays of classical and modern playwrights).
The University of Drama is directed by the Senate , the Rector (at present professor dr. Béres András), the Scientific Secretary and the heads of the two departments.
The institution is supported by the state (through the Ministry of Education) but it also has its own incomes thanks to the performances played for paying audience.
The theatre school of Târgu Mures has had amongst its teaching stuff a series of outstanding artists such as: Stefan Braborescu, Maria Cupcea, Kovacs Gyorgy, Tompa Miklos, Calin Florian, Lohinszky Lorand.


MATERIAL CONDITIONS

   The STUDIO Theater

The University of Drama has halls with their own classroom stages for the practical activity, halls for the theoretical activity, special laboratories where are studied speech techniques and music, dance-halls for training in acrobatics, scenic movement, dance and fencing.
The library has 38.000 volumes in several languages and a videotheque consisting of plays and artistic films recorded on video tapes.
The University has also a photo-video laboratory where are made the specific printed matters (posters, theatre programms, book-lets) by the literary manager of each department and by the photo-video technician.

SERVICIES AND FACILITIES

The University offers to its best students grants and the possibility of being lodged in hostels and of having their meals in students canteens.

The best students can obtain scholarships and participate at festivals abroad (Avignon, Budapest) and in the country (Bucharest, Slobozia, Sibiu, Sighisoara, etc.).


ENROLLMENT CONDITIONS, EXAMINATIONS, PERIOD OF STUDY

Graduates with a matriculation diploma can enroll for the entrance examinations which have two stages (the first one being eliminatory).
At the practical examinations the candidates, for the acting department, recite poems, present monologues, improvisation exercises and are tested on their musical and rhythmical aptitude.
At the theoretical examinations they are tested on Romanian literature (those wishing to enter the Hungarian Department will also be tested on Hungarian literature).
At the stage direction department the candidates are tested on their cultural knowledge, visual memory, creative imagination; candidates must analyze a drama and put on stage an excerpt from the same drama.
At the theatrology department the candidates are tested on their knowledge in the field of theatrology and universal theatre. They will be tested also on Romanian literature and a foreign language, chosen by them.
The University offers a 4 years study course in acting and theatrology and a 5 years study course in stage direction.
Students must face practical and theoretical examinations at the end of each term. Having passed their diploma examination they graduate from the University with a licensing diploma in either acting, stage direction or theatrology.
